Why do people gamble? Analyzing motivation

13.02.2025
They say that gambling is played for money, but is it true? A recent report The Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) shows that things are much more complicated. Let’s look at what motivates players and how these motives relate to different types of gambling.
🔹 Financial benefit vs. Entertainment

Most gamblers participate in gambling for the sake of big winnings (86%) or for the sake of the process and fun (70%). But here’s a caveat:
  • 📌 The National Lottery is played here for a potential jackpot. People understand the low odds, but "what if?" outweighs logic.
  • 📌 Sports betting, online bingo, lottery scratch cards — drive, emotions, waiting for the result. It is important not only to win, but also the game process itself.

🔹 The social factor

It plays a huge role in offline gambling, especially in bingo — it’s not just a game, but a part of leisure and socializing. But in online betting and casinos, the social aspect is less significant, because they often play alone.
