Gambling is quickly becoming more popular in Africa, particularly among the youth, as highlighted by a recent report from the FinAccess Household Survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics of Kenya. For many, this activity is not just a form of entertainment but also a potential source of income amidst economic challenges.

  • Convenient access: Online platforms have simplified the process significantly— all that’s required is a smartphone and internet access.

📊 Key Statistics:

  • Approximately 11.2% of Kenyans engage in betting, with 14.4% residing in urban areas and 8.9% in rural regions.
  • The highest participation rate is found among men aged 26-35 (15.2%), followed closely by those aged 18-25 (14.3%).
  • The average expenditure on betting is 1,825 Ksh, with urban bettors spending more (2,125 Ksh) compared to their rural counterparts (1,481 Ksh).
  • On average, men invest more in betting than women, spending 1,876 Ksh versus 1,623 Ksh.

💰 Perception of Gambling:

The survey reveals that 10.9% of participants view gambling as an acceptable means of making money. This perspective is more prevalent among men (13.7%) compared to women (8.2%). Among young individuals aged 18-25, the acceptance rate is highest at 13.4%. Additionally, urban dwellers (11.9%) are more likely to see gambling as a source of income compared to those living in rural areas (10.1%).
