The report of the German gambling regulator (GGL) for 2023 has been released. Basic moments:
1. The estimate of the illegal market is from €400 to €600 million, while the legal market generated €13.7 billion. Gray operators brought in about €50 million per month. However, the estimate of the illegal market may be significantly underestimated due to its specificity.
2. 1864 sites were checked, of which 133 were blocked. Among them: 87 offshore operators and 46 affiliate sites. The regulator also demanded that criminal cases be initiated against violators. The effectiveness of blocking is questionable.
3. Following GGL's notification, 63 of the 87 illegal operators identified ceased operations in the country.
4. GGL’s most effective method in the fight against illegal operators is blocking payments.
