The Portuguese online gambling market wrapped up 2024 with exceptional momentum. According to the latest
report from national regulator
SRIJ, the total Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reached € 323 million in Q4 — a year-on-year increase of 42.1%.
Key Highlights🎰 Online Casino
Revenue from online casino games reached € 184.6 million, marking a 19.5% increase YoY. Slot machines dominated the segment with 80.2% of all activity, followed by "banca francesa" (5.4%), roulette (5.3%), and blackjack (4.8%).
⚽️ Sports Betting
Sports betting revenue soared to € 138.3 million — a massive 90% growth compared to Q4 2023. Football remains the top choice for bettors (75%), followed by tennis (10.5%) and basketball (10.2%). Peak betting activity occurred during UEFA Champions League matches, Portugal’s Primeira Liga, and the English Premier League.
Wagering VolumeTotal wagers during the quarter hit a record-breaking € 5.1 billion, reflecting a 21.1% YoY growth.
Player Activity- Active accounts: 4.7 million users (+15% YoY)
- Players who placed at least one bet: 1.2 million (+11.9%)
Demographics- 78.4% of users are under 45 years old, with the 25−34 age group being the most engaged (33.9%)
- 33.1% of new users are aged 18−24
- Lisbon and Porto lead in regional player distribution, accounting for 21.5% and 21.2% respectively
- 94.9% of users hold Portuguese citizenship; among foreigners, Brazilian nationals make up the largest group (50.1%)
Responsible GamblingSelf-exclusion numbers continue to rise. In Q4, 16,200 players opted for self-restriction — a 36% increase YoY. The total number of self-excluded players now stands at 292,400.
Tackling Illegal GamblingThe regulator blocked 112 unlicensed websites, issued 41 cease-and-desist orders, and referred 5 cases to the public prosecutor’s office.
