The popularity of betting is growing among the youth of Africa.
GeoPoll interviewed more than 3,000 young people from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. Here's what we learned about the trends of 2024:
🔹 Who makes the bets? Betting is becoming an increasingly widespread phenomenon — 76.16% of respondents admitted that they had ever placed bets. Kenya remains the leader (82.81%), followed by South Africa (73.94%) and Ghana (73.03%).
Regarding the status of participants:
- 38% work
- 21.44% are unemployed
- 20.15% are engaged in their own business
- 19% are students
🔹 How often do they put it on? The frequency of bets is increasing. In 2024, 32% of respondents said they bet once a week, while 17.76% gamble daily and 15.61% gamble more than once a day. This shows how accessible betting platforms have become.
⚽️ Football is the undisputed leader Football remains the favorite betting sport: 76.53% prefer it. Casinos and other sports lag far behind — 9.69% and 5.14%, respectively. Football betting is especially popular during major events such as the African Cup of Nations.
💵 How much do they spend on betting?The majority of respondents (56%) spend less than $5 per month on betting.
🔍 How was the research conducted?The GeoPoll survey was conducted in March 2024. The participants are mainly urban youth: 72% of men and 28% of women, aged 18-34 years.
